Welcome to ABC Durham
Supporting, connecting, and empowering families of bright and gifted learners across Durham Region.
Every child's educational journey is unique. For families of bright and gifted children, that journey can often feel exciting, rewarding, and, at times, overwhelming. Understanding gifted identification, school programming, IEPs, IPRCs, enrichment opportunities, and advocacy can be complex-especially when you're navigating the process for the first time.
ABC Durham is a local chapter of the Association for Bright Children of Ontario (ABC Ontario), a registered charitable organization dedicated to supporting families of bright and gifted learners through information, advocacy, education, and community.
Our Vision
We believe that every gifted child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential in an educational environment that recognizes and nurtures their unique strengths, abilities, and social-emotional needs.
Our goal is to build a welcoming and inclusive community where parents, caregivers, educators, and advocates can connect, learn from one another, and work together to support gifted learners throughout Durham Region.
What We Do
ABC Durham aims to:
-
Support parents navigating gifted identification, programming, IEPs, IPRCs, and educational pathways.
-
Connect families with trusted information, resources, and experienced parent mentors.
-
Organize educational workshops, webinars, and community events.
-
Foster collaboration among parents, educators, and community partners.
-
Advocate for equitable, transparent, and appropriate educational opportunities for gifted learners.
-
Raise awareness of the unique academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) students.
Why ABC Durham?
As parents ourselves, we understand that receiving a gifted identification often marks the beginning-not the end-of-the journey.
Many families find themselves asking questions such as:
-
What does gifted identification mean?
-
What are my child's educational options?
-
What is an IEP, and how does it support my child?
-
What happens during an IPRC meeting?
-
How can I effectively advocate for my child's needs?
-
Where can I connect with other parents who have been through this journey?
You don't have to navigate these questions alone.
ABC Durham is here to provide reliable information, practical guidance, and a supportive community of families who understand the challenges and opportunities of raising gifted children.
